![]() ![]() Looking forward to Bloodstrike 23 and 24. You'll probably be wondering who some of these characters are or what their deal is, but to be honest its not that deep that you can't infer by plugging in some basic comic archetypes. One of the core members of the ABC Warriors. As a new reader, there isn't a ton to hook your teeth into except Fiffe's command of layouts, storytelling, and dialog. Deadlock screenshots, images and pictures - Comic Vine Deadlock Character » Deadlock appears in 230 issues. So really, it's hard to judge it too harshly on those aspects. But again, this series is an unashamed love letter to particular time period of a particular kind of comic. John Locke was a common man working as a repo man until a day when he got a job which consisted of recovering a briefcase that belonged to the military, instead of returning the briefcase he sold it to a gang and then proceeded to spend all the money he got from the sale in cocaine. The rest of the cast is at least somewhat interesting in personality and design. Its unfortunate that this issue uses his experience in becoming a Bloodstrike member as it's story through-line. Deadlock is a terribly designed character, looks unabashedly like Marvel's Wolverine (sans claws), even prone to that character's 'berserker' tendencies. ![]() Unfortunately by being so closely tied to the Liefeld original, Liefeld's weaknesses can't also help shine through. Establishing this 'suicide squad' of killers who if they die are just put back together again and sent back out for their next deadly mission, via a government backed cyborg resurrection program. This is useful as it gives Fiffe a chance to establish these characters for new readers like me. One, Fiffe explains in the back matter, that the series never actually had. This zero issue in particular acts as an origin story of sorts. Bloodstrike Brutalists is very clearly one man's pet project, to fill in a missing gap of an incomplete series, while also using the opportunity to resolve a few dangling threads. The guy i s overflowing with creative energy, and he wears what he loves on his sleeve. And his layouts and lettering are easily some of the best in the business. Fiffe's art is always a treat with its expressive lines, and marker style coloring. Fiffe's Copra is amazing, being both a love letter to 80s DC & Marvel and very much its own take on the modern team super book. Convinced that the government is working. Much like how I got into Brandon Graham's Prophet, Erik Larsen's Supreme, and Joe Keatinge's Glory several years ago. Deadlock Photos View all photos Movie Info Bruce Willis stars as Ron Whitlock, a wanted criminal leading a team of mercenaries on a mission of vengeance. I bought this issue, and plan to buy the next two, based on Michel Fiffe's name alone. I hear he's generally a great guy, he's contribution to the indie comic revolution can't be understated, and I hear regardless of everything else, he's a workhorse. First a note, I don't like Rob Liefeld's comic work. ![]()

There are no stations along this stretch, and it is mainly used by trains with diesel-electric engines going express from Jamaica to Babylon. Some LIRR maps also include as part of the Ronkonkoma Branch the non-electrified Central Branch, which splits from the Ronkonkoma Branch east of Bethpage and connects with the more southern Montauk Branch, just west of Babylon. In 2016, the LIRR restored year-long weekend service between Ronkonkoma and Greenport. In 2013, the span of weekend service was extended to operate from the first weekend in May to the last weekend in November. Ultimately, weekday service remained, but weekend service outside of the summer season (defined as Memorial Day- Columbus Day) was discontinued. In 2010, the idea was entertained by the financially troubled MTA, who proposed eliminating all scoot service except for the popular summer weekend service. The LIRR has cited these ridership trends in attempts to end service east of Ronkonkoma. In 2018, the LIRR's second–least used service (the West Hempstead Branch) had more than 14 times as many riders as the Greenport Branch did in the same year, Greenport Branch riders accounted for 0.08% of LIRR ridership overall. The Greenport Branch has by far the lowest ridership among LIRR services for which data is available. Added in summer 2016, this is the only Greenport scoot trip to serve the New York City terminals. On Fridays during the summer, the eastbound trip to Riverhead is extended to Greenport, and one additional evening trip runs from Greenport to Jamaica, running express between Ronkonkoma and Jamaica. Weekend service consists of four round-trips each day between Ronkonkoma and Greenport. Also, one additional round trip is scheduled between Ronkonkoma and Riverhead (formerly Yaphank) each weekday. Three eastbound and four westbound scoots travel each weekday between Ronkonkoma and Greenport. This segment is served by diesel-electric "scoots", most of which terminate at Ronkonkoma, requiring customers traveling west of Ronkonkoma to transfer there. The relatively small amount of train movements on this segment are governed by train orders and timetable authority. The 46 miles (74 km) between Ronkonkoma and Greenport, known as the Greenport Branch, is the only remaining dark territory area on the Long Island Rail Road that does not have signals. The project was ultimately completed in 2018. In 2012, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) started adding a second track to the line between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma to increase capacity. In the decades since, the amount of parking at Ronkonkoma has expanded. ![]() Commuters complained that the expanded parking facilities at Ronkonkoma built in anticipation of electrification were overcrowded and already inadequate, and that double-parking and vandalism were rampant. By September 1988, over 2,000 new riders during the morning rush hour had switched to the Ronkonkoma Branch, much of which occurred in the first month after electrification, faster than the LIRR expected. A survey of peak-hour Ronkonkoma Branch passengers conducted by the LIRR in April 1988 found that 42 percent of the branch's passengers were new to the line: 34 percent switched from other lines (the Port Jefferson and Montauk Branches), 6 percent were new to the LIRR as a whole and 2 percent recently returned to the LIRR. The $168.5 million project attracted many new passengers. Average rush-hour trip time from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station decreased from 97 minutes pre-electrification (including the mandatory transfer from a diesel to an electric train) to 71 minutes afterwards. Formerly, service on this segment was provided by diesel trains, which could not enter Penn Station, requiring a transfer. The western segment of the line from Hicksville to Ronkonkoma was electrified in 1987, creating a one-seat ride to Penn Station. ![]() ![]() The legendary Orpheus travelled with the Argonauts and playing his harp so wonderfully that it drowned out the dangerous song of the Sirens. The most famous story of Calliope is the one regarding her legendary son, Orpheus. Often these were hymns of praise to the goddess of poetic inspiration, but sometimes the stories themselves were about Calliope and her family. While Calliope was said to inspire the poets, she also appeared in their works. Calliope comes from the Greek words kallos and ops, meaning “beautiful voice.” Calliope’s Son Her name, in fact, reflected the tradition of oral history. She inspired the songs that the stories were set to as well. Thus, Calliope did not just inspire written words. The works of the great poets were added to the repertoires of the many travelling singers and court bards whose job it was to tell the stories of their religion and history. When Hesiod and Homer wrote their works, they wrote in poetic verse so that the stories could be set to music. Playing music along with the stories helped to make them more memorable, both to those who shared them and to the listeners. Bards trained for years to memorize the songs that told the illiterate populace important stories while also entertaining them. They were sung.įor hundreds, if not thousands, of years, singing had been the primary way of passing on the stories of the gods. Before the 8th century BC, all the mythology of the area was passed on through oral tradition.Įven after poets like Hesiod and Homer began to record the legends, they were not read or recited for audiences. The Greek myths existed long before they were written down. The Muse of Song and PoetryĬalliope was the muse of epic poetry who gave inspiration to writers and singers. She was the Muse who inspired their work. Later they were each assigned a different area of influence.Ĭalliope was particularly important to ancient poets. Others said they were the children of Apollo, while some writers said they were primeval daughters of Gaia and Uranus.Įarly in Greek history, the Muses worked collectively. Some accounts said that they were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory). There was no consensus among the Greeks as to the parentage of the Muses. Mount Helicon, also in Boeotia, was said to be their home and the springs there flowed with the waters of inspiration. The Muses continued to be associated with water long after they stopped being thought of as nymphs. This was the homeland of Hesiod, one of the oldest writers whose works survive, so the Muses are well-documented from the earliest days of written mythology. It is thought that the idea of nine Muses, as opposed to a variety of nymphs, began in the region of Boeotia. Over time, though, the triple goddesses were tripled for a total of nine. ![]() ![]() Eventually their mythology grew until they became an independent class of goddesses.Īt this time, there were probably only three Muses deities in Greek mythology often appeared in groups of three. The earliest Muses were said to be water nymphs who lived near the wells that gave inspiration. The Muses were depicted as nine beautiful young women, each with an attribute that corresponded to a type of work they inspired. These sister goddesses were the sources of inspiration and knowledge for artists, historians, and writers. This included one of the most tragic romances in ancient literature the story of her own son.įar more than just another nameless nymph, find out why Calliope was considered the greatest of the Muses! Calliope and her SistersĬalliope was one of the nine Muses, Mousai in Greek. Calliope was given a distinct mythology that separated her from her sisters.īy inspiring epic poems that combined the stories of the gods and the past with beautifully crafted words, Calliope was credited with making sure the stories important to her were preserved forever. There is more to Calliope’s story than just the invocations of the great poets of the ancient world, though. The writers from whom modern readers learn about the beliefs of ancient Greece made sure that their Muse had a special place in the works she inspired. As the deity of epic poems and songs, she was the patroness of writers like Homer, Ovid, and Hesiod. The Muses were goddesses of the arts who bestowed the gift of inspiration on artists, poets, dancers, and philosophers.Īmong the nine sisters, Calliope was held in particularly high regard.
